What the app and this website send, where it goes, and what you can turn off.
Kinematic is free, and it doesn't make money from you. We don't sell, rent or trade anything about you.
The app works without signing up or signing in, and it runs with no internet connection.
Your projects stay on your computer. The app goes online to check for updates and to fetch a model a tool needs, and you can turn both off.
When you reach out, volunteer or report a bug, we use what you send to answer you and fix things. Nothing else.
The app
Kinematic needs no account. Install it and it runs, online or off. Your projects, pictures, sound and models are files on your computer, and they go nowhere unless you send them.
Checking for updates
When Kinematic opens, it asks kinematic.org whether a newer version is out. Like every web request, this one shows your IP address. It sends nothing about you or your projects. It doesn't run when Kinematic starts straight into a show.
Preferences, then untick Check for updates when Kinematic opens.
Downloading models
Some tools, like background removal, depth from a photo or speech to text, need a model file the first time you use them. Kinematic downloads it from get.kinematic.org or from Hugging Face and keeps it on your computer for next time. Those servers see your IP address and which file was asked for. The pictures, video and sound you run through a model stay on your computer.
Preferences, Models, then untick Download models automatically when a node needs one. Or start Kinematic with --offline: it downloads no models, fetches no shader code from the web, installs no Python packages, and Python scripts can't reach the network.
What your project connects to
A project can talk to the outside world on purpose: stream video over NDI, send OSC or Art-Net to a light desk, call a web address, or bring in a shader from a Shadertoy link. That data goes where you point it, and whoever runs that service handles it under their own terms.
Reporting a bug
Report a Bug in the Help menu sends what you write: a title, a description, and your email address only if you add one for a reply. It also sends the app version and your operating system. Unless you untick them, it sends the last 2,000 lines of the log and your graph (the nodes and how they connect), plus any files you attach.
Before it sends, it removes paths to your home folder and anything that looks like a password or key. That cleanup is careful but not perfect, so leave out anything private. Reports are kept for up to one year and go by email to the people who fix bugs.
This website
No cookies, no analytics, no ads. Nothing on kinematic.org follows you around the web or counts your visits.
One thing is stored in your browser: the address of the page you're on, kept in this tab's session storage so that a new page opens at its top. It never leaves your browser, and it's deleted when you close the tab.
Hosting. The site, the downloads at get.kinematic.org and the forms run on Cloudflare. Like any web host, it handles your IP address and browser details to deliver pages and stop attacks.
Reaching out and volunteering
The Reach out form sends your email address, a subject and your message. The volunteer form also sends your name, where you are, the roles you picked, the hours you can give, and what you tell us about your experience.
When you open a form, a Cloudflare spam check called Turnstile loads and looks at your browser to tell people from bots.
Your message reaches the Kinematic team as an email, delivered by a service called Resend, with your IP address and browser name attached so we can spot abuse. To stop floods, the site counts sends from each IP address for about an hour.
We use your message to reply, and for volunteers, to get in touch about the roles you picked. We don't add you to a mailing list.
